We are always on about the "Search Engine"
results. Yet few actually are aware of how Search
Engines (SE) work.
I am aware of the very complex
algorithms that the SE use and do not pretend to
understand how they work. I do know what they do
though! They sort out the wheat from the chaff.
That being said, I recommend the KISS principle in
web site design work.
Most people using the internet SEs are looking for
information. The SEs are about information. They rate
websites on information. So websites should contain
information or CONTENT.
In Real Estate the 3 most important things are
position, position, & position.
In website design the 3 most important things are
CONTENT, CONTENT, & CONTENT.
Without good CONTENT you will be largely ignore by
the SEs.
CONTENT needs to have all you keywords that you used
to load into your Megatags in the visible text of
your page(s). Each page needs its own keyword loaded
CONTENT relevant to the subject of that page. I'm not
talking about keyword spamming, I mean real and
relevant CONTENT.
Unfortunately this means work on compiling and
editing text, yes, boring but absolutely necessary.
So, now we have our CONTENT. There is a 4th most
important thing. It is NAVIGATION.
SEs need to be able to find your website and ALL the
pages it contains.
Basically the SE algorithms cannot deal with those
sites with FRAMES and/or FLASH. The easiest way to
deal with this is to not have Frames or Flash. Frames
may be nice for visual navigation but the SEs cannot
get past you home page. Flash confuses the algorithms
and the SEs cannot move past a page with Flash.
Now there are ways around this with navigation
hyperlinks inside each page HTML and a robots.txt
and/or a sitemap.xml file in the server root
directory.
Many web designers have never even heard of these
files, yet they continue to use WYSIWYG editors to
create their "works of art" with features that are
used just because it seems to look good and they are
available. They think it looks professional. It may
impress the client, but not the SEs. What do you say
to your client in 4-6 months when you delivery them
their website statistics (you do don't you?) and
their hits are negligable. Do you then offer them a
SEO service as an extra cost when it should have been
included in the original design work.
So NAVIGATION structure is critical for SEs to find
your pages.
Now, back to KISS. You may have heard it before, or
by now should have guessed what it stands for.
